1-10-2026
The eighth-ranked Messiah men’s volleyball team opened their 2026 campaign with an emphatic display of dominance on January 11, blanking both Cairn University (25-11, 25-10, 25-11) and Grove City College (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) without dropping a set. The Falcons’ balanced offensive attack and relentless defensive pressure at Grantham, Pa., sent an early message that their top-10 ranking is well-earned.
Offensive Firepower on Full Display
Messiah’s most impressive trait across both matches was the depth and distribution of their attack. Tyler Good led the charge against Cairn with 11 kills, while Alex Kagoro paced the Grove City victory with 9 kills and 2 service aces. The Falcons spread opportunities across their roster with six different players recording 5 or more kills on the day, making them nearly impossible to defend.
Setter Brandon Sharp orchestrated the offense masterfully, accumulating 48 assists across the two matches (21 against Cairn, 27 against Grove City). His ability to keep opposing defenses off balance created high-percentage opportunities throughout the lineup. Cooper Henseler added 10 assists in the opening match, giving Messiah seamless production regardless of personnel.
The supporting cast delivered consistent punch from every rotation. Everett Macurda contributed 7 kills against Grove City, while Jake Eby, Todd Snyder, Tyler McConnell, Ethan Earhart, Connor Himelfarb, and Seth Rajnic all made significant offensive contributions. This multi-pronged attack prevented either opponent from keying on any single threat.
Defensive Dominance at Net and Service Line
While the offense garnered attention, Messiah’s defensive performance proved equally devastating. Jake Eby owned the net with 5.5 total blocks against Grove City, including a spectacular sequence in the second set where he factored into four consecutive blocks, two with Sharp, one with Macurda, and a solo stuff that turned a 9-5 lead into a commanding 13-6 advantage. His partnership with Good yielded multiple double blocks against Cairn, establishing front-row intimidation that disrupted both opponents’ timing.
Sean Gillespie terrorized Cairn’s serve receive unit with 6 service aces, consistently finding seams and forcing out-of-system plays. His aggressive serving set the tone for Messiah’s ability to dictate tempo throughout both matches. The Falcons’ serving pressure extended beyond Gillespie, with multiple players contributing aces and forcing reception errors that led to easy transition opportunities.
The back row matched the front line’s intensity. Aidan Dunwoody anchored the defense against Grove City with 7 digs, while Sharp added 4 digs against Cairn despite his setting responsibilities. This complete defensive effort extended rallies and frustrated both opponents’ offensive rhythms.
Grove City’s Third-Set Resilience
The only competitive moments came in the final set against Grove City, where the Wolverines refused to fold quietly. After falling behind 19-12, Grove City mounted an impressive 5-0 run to close within two at 19-17, forcing Messiah to prove they could execute under pressure. The Falcons responded with poise, as Gillespie, Sharp, and Himelfarb delivered clutch kills to close out the 25-18 victory and complete the sweep. The sequence demonstrated Messiah’s ability to maintain composure when challenged, a valuable early-season test.
Championship Mentality from the Start
What stood out beyond the lopsided scores was Messiah’s professional approach. The Falcons never allowed either opponent to gain momentum, breaking open close early stretches with decisive runs built on serving, blocking, and transition offense. Against Cairn, they turned 5-4 and 8-2 leads into blowouts. Against Grove City, they answered every challenge with timely execution.
The roster depth gives head coach significant flexibility as the season progresses. With multiple players capable of stepping up offensively and the ability to rotate fresh legs without sacrificing quality, Messiah appears built for the grind of a championship pursuit.
Road Ahead
Beginning 2-0 with dominant performances provides momentum as Messiah heads to the Cougar Kickoff Classic at Misericordia University. Their opening tournament test comes Friday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. against Wentworth Institute of Technology, a matchup between ranked opponents that will offer a clearer gauge of where the Falcons stand among the nation’s elite.
If this opening weekend serves as any indication, Messiah has the offensive weapons, defensive tenacity, and championship mentality to make serious noise in 2026.
