The Messiah Falcons didn’t just win their opening match of the 2026 Cougar Kickoff Classic on January 23; they sent a clear message to the rest of the field. Facing off against Wentworth, the Falcons delivered a masterclass in efficiency, dismantling the Leopards in straight sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-22).
While the scoreboards remained competitive, Messiah’s composure under pressure ensured the match never truly felt out of their grasp. This victory pushes the Falcons to a perfect 3-0 start for the season.
Efficiency Wins Championships
The most glaring difference in this matchup was Messiah’s offensive precision. The Falcons posted a blistering .400 hitting percentage, a statistic that usually guarantees a win at this level of play. Wentworth, while respectable at .266, simply could not keep pace with the Falcons’ diversified attack.
Messiah dominated nearly every statistical category:
- Kills: 37-29
- Service Aces: 8-5
- Total Blocks: 7-2
- Assists: 29-25
The Falcons’ Engine Room
Alex Kagoro was the standout on the floor, punishing the Wentworth defense with 12 kills and adding a defensive edge with 3 service aces. Facilitating this high-powered offense was Brandon Sharp, who orchestrated the floor with 26 assists and chipped in with opportunistic kills of his own.
The middle was effectively shut down by the duo of Todd Snyder and Jake Eby, who combined for 6 blocks. Tyler McConnell also provided critical secondary scoring with 7 kills, ensuring Wentworth couldn’t focus their defense on just one player.
Set-by-Set Grit
- Set One (25-23): This was a game of runs. After trailing 23-21 late, Messiah showed championship mettle. A kill by Kagoro followed by two clutch aces from Sean Gillespie snatched the momentum back to close out the set.
- Set Two (25-18): This was the Falcons’ most dominant stretch. They surged to a 22-12 lead, effectively silencing the Wentworth bench and cruising to a 2-0 match advantage.
- Set Three (25-22): Wentworth attempted a final stand, taking a brief 8-7 lead. Messiah responded with a definitive 7-0 run to regain control. A Wentworth service error eventually sealed the sweep for the Falcons.
The Weekend
Messiah remains in Dallas, Pa. for Day Two of the Cougar Kickoff Classic on January 24. They face a double-header schedule:
- vs. Thiel College at 1:00 PM
- vs. Elmira College at 3:00 PM
The Falcons are currently playing at an elite level, and with this much momentum, the rest of the weekend looks bright. Messiah will pack up quickly after the Elmira match and head back to Grantham to avoid snow-megeddon scheduled to hit later that night. Safe travels!!!.
