What makes a great libero or defensive specialist? Or, what makes a great outside hitter when it comes to defense? The ability to dig!
People that play the game know how hard it is to dig. People that don’t play the game have absolutely no idea. Try this… the next time Randolph Macon is in town, walk out onto the court during early warmups and have Kody Rogan serve you up. Or Ryan Roller on Wentworth. Or Owen Wickens on Nazareth. See if it changes your perspective on what a libero does… Serve/receive is just one aspect of their role, but getting the ball directly to the setter is an art. Especially when he doesn’t have to run 20 feet to get there. The liberos that can get that perfect 3 pass, there is no greater feeling. So tonight, we look at digs/set to grade our defenders. Just 16 players in the country who averaged 3 assists per set or better. (Minimum 15 sets played)
