Baldwin Wallace University men’s volleyball team extended its unblemished record to 5-0 this weekend, capturing the Fisher Quad title at the Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium. Under the leadership of Head Coach Kyle Mars, the Yellow Jackets secured three consecutive sweeps against SUNY Poly, Carlow, and host St. John Fisher.

Saturday Finale: BW Outlasts No. 17 St. John Fisher

The weekend culminated in a highly competitive showdown against St. John Fisher (3-1). Despite the straight-set scoreline, the Yellow Jackets had to display significant composure to earn the 29-27, 25-22, 25-21 victory.

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle featuring 19 tie scores and 8 lead changes. BW eventually secured the 29-27 win by tallying 16 kills in the frame. While the second set was more decisive with only one tie and no lead changes, the third set saw the Jackets rally through six ties to finish the sweep.

Individual Standouts

Several Yellow Jackets delivered pivotal performances to secure the win over the Cardinals:

  • Owen Huynh: The junior outside hitter powered the offense with a match-high 17 kills.
  • Ethan Gundrum: The first-year setter recorded his first collegiate double-double, distributing 36 assists and leading the defense with 10 digs.
  • Colby Whiteside: The senior middle hitter provided a spark from the service line with 4 aces and added 3 blocks.
  • Tyler Schunk: The first-year outside hitter contributed 11 kills, 7 digs, and 3 aces.
  • Bobby Mayberry: The junior middle hitter anchored the net with 4 blocks while hitting at a .500 efficiency.

Weekend Review: Friday and Saturday Afternoon

Before facing St. John Fisher, Baldwin Wallace handled their first two opponents with efficiency. On Friday, the Jackets defeated SUNY Poly (25-20, 25-21, 25-18). Tyler Schunk led that effort with 13 kills and 9 digs.

Saturday afternoon began with a dominant performance against Carlow University. BW cruised to a 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-12, 25-14, and 25-8. During this match, David Thompson led the attack with 9 kills, while Aiden Kim recorded a career-high 25 assists.

Looking Ahead
